Loneliness is more than just a fleeting feeling; it's a pervasive issue impacting our health and wellbeing. Research indicates that social isolation can be as detrimental as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, dementia, and even premature death.
While it's commonly assumed that loneliness predominantly affects the elderly, studies reveal that young adults aged 18–22 report the highest levels of loneliness. Additionally, adults between 25–49 often experience hidden, indirect loneliness.
I know I keep saying this – and it’s because we seem to have lost sight of it: as social beings, we are wired for connection — genuine, face-to-face interactions that ground us. The absence of such connections can leave us feeling adrift.
